Referring an adult client

Developmental Educators (DEs) are tertiary educated disability specialists, integral to multi-disciplinary teams due to their specific disability-related expertise. The DE profession is underpinned by developmental, individual, strengths-based, least restrictive, age-appropriate, person-centred approaches. DEs recognise that environmental factors impact self-perception, functional abilities, and participation.   Consistent with the developmental model (Wolfensberger & Tullman, 1982), the environment, including social discrimination, is considered to contribute to participation restriction (Schneidert, Hurst, Miller, & Üstun, 2003). DEs develop and apply specific strategies to support individual developmental learning goals of people with intellectual/developmental/physical/neurological disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and/or acquired disability, across the lifespan.   DEs have the following core competencies and knowledge: case management; developmental assessment & positive intervention (behavioural analysis & functional skill development); positive behaviour support; research and evaluation; advocacy; communication skills; counselling support; dual disability; health issues; and functional life skills.   DEs are eligible as members of the professional body, Developmental Educators Australia Inc. (DEAI). The DEAI supports and promotes the profession, and provides members with ongoing professional development, networking and updates, which is critical given the changing landscape of disability support services.  (Rillotta & Alexander, 2022) ​ Ref: Rillotta, F., & Alexander, J.
