Functional Capacity Assessments (FCA) for NDIS

A strengths-based, neuro-affirming assessment of how your autism, neurodivergence or disability affects your daily life — so your NDIS plan reflects who you actually are, not a checklist of deficits.

Functional Capacity Assessments (FCA) for NDIS
The evidence your NDIS plan is built on.
A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is a structured, evidence-based evaluation of how your disability affects your ability to do the things that matter in your everyday life — at home, at work, in your community, and in your relationships. The written report it produces is the primary evidence the NDIA uses to determine your funding and the supports included in your plan.
An FCA is not a diagnostic assessment — it doesn't tell you what your diagnosis is. Instead, it tells the story of how your disability actually shows up in your day-to-day life: what you can do independently, where you need support, how much support you need, and why. A well-written FCA translates your lived experience into the language the NDIA understands and acts on.
FCAs are used at a number of points in the NDIS journey: when first applying for access, when requesting a plan review, when your needs have changed significantly, or when the NDIA asks for updated evidence of functional impairment.
Why use a Developmental Educator for NDIS FCAs?
Developmental Educators are Masters degree-qualified disability professionals who specialise in understanding the whole person — their strengths, their environment, their goals, and how disability intersects with every part of their life.
Unlike a generic allied health assessment, a DE-delivered FCA is positions neurological difference as a natural part of human variation, not a deficit to be corrected.
Considering a person holistically - biological, psychological, and social factors - our FCAs are grounded in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), and a genuinely neuro-affirming framework.
Â
For autistic and neurodivergent people, this matters.
Â
As assessors who understands masking, alexithymia, interoceptive differences, sensory processing, and the cumulative impact of undiagnosed or late-diagnosed neurodivergence we provide a report that actually captures your experience — not one that underestimates your needs because you present well in a one-hour appointment.
What We Look At in NDIS Functional Capacity Assessments
A whole-of-life picture, not a deficit list
The assessment covers the areas of your life where your disability has the most impact. We use standardised tools alongside conversation and observation — so the picture we build is both clinically rigorous and genuinely yours.
Daily Living & Self-Care
Meal preparation, personal hygiene, household routines, budgeting, and managing a home environment independently or with support.
Social & Community Participation
Connecting with others, managing social situations, accessing community spaces, and participating in activities that matter to you.
Employment & Learning
Capacity to work or study, workplace or study barriers, executive function challenges, and the support needed to participate meaningfully.
Communication & Decision-Making
Expressive and receptive communication, processing speed, decision-making capacity, and how your needs are best supported in practice.
Sensory & Regulation
Sensory sensitivities, interoceptive awareness, emotional regulation, and how the environment affects your functioning day to day.
Transitions & Life Planning
Support needs across life stages — including transitions in housing, employment, relationships, and increasing independence over time.

Our FCA Process: What to expect
Every NDIS functional capacity assessment (FCA) is different because every person is different. Here is how the process typically works.
1. Initial conversation
We talk through what you need the assessment for, what areas of your life it should cover, and whether an FCA from a Developmental Educator is the right fit for your situation. No obligation, no cost for this conversation.
2. Pre-assessment preparation
We gather any existing reports, medical information, or supporting documentation relevant to your assessment. We may also send you some questionnaires to complete in advance, so the assessment session itself can focus on conversation rather than paperwork.
3. Assessment session(s)
The assessment itself involves a structured conversation, observation where relevant, and standardised tools. Sessions can be in-person or via telehealth, wherever you feel most comfortable. Some assessments require more than one session depending on complexity.
4. Report writing
We write a thorough, evidence-based report that tells your story clearly and advocates for the supports you need. The report includes your functional profile, the evidence base for each recommendation, and specific support hours or types linked to each area of need.
5. Report review & delivery
You receive the report first, before it goes anywhere else. We walk you through it, check it accurately reflects your experience, and make any corrections needed. The final report is then provided to your support coordinator, plan manager, or the NDIA as directed by you.
You are the expert on your own life. Our role is to give that expertise a clinical framework the NDIA can understand and respond to. Nothing in your report will surprise you — because you will have been part of building it.
